It was spotted in Nairobi yesterday, blocking almost half the street. The next time there is a riot in the city, I would encourage the arsonists to torch this car in lieu of a soda kiosk / matatu / railway line. A reward of an all steel Chinese bicycle (black colored, metal brakes) will be offered on visual confirmation.
Note: People aren’t rioting in Haiti because of food being turned into biofuel. People are rioting because the price of gasoline has gone up. And when you talk about missing historical perspective, you ought to look at the full historical perspective and not just selective history and facts.
In fact, some M*ngiki are riotting this morning despite the rain… They heard your call
Stop leaving your car hanging out in the street! Problems with the other tenants about parking?
Selective reporting is nothing new, there were reports of food riots in Austria yet I cant find even one story to confirm this!
Paul Farmer has written a number of books on haiti :Uses of Haiti is an excellent start; also Randall Robinson’s Unbroken Agony, a short review here
http://www.blacklooks.org/2007/08/unbroken_agony.html
and finally Damming the Flood: Haiti, Aristide and the politics of containment by Peter Hallward (havent read it but Haitian activists are recommending it)
sokari:
The paul farmer book looks interesting. I ll check it out. Though i think the place was doomed from the outset, too many loaded parameters and interests against long term success.
By the way, the link to the arms sales on your blog post, those arent really arms sales, but more of an “allowed arms export license°, it means the components listed can be legally sold to Haiti. You need to look at “issued individual licenses” to see the actual sale. If you notice in the pdf, they havent actually sold anything to Haiti (for comparison look at “Estonia” where there is both an “issued/individual license” = sale, and “open export licenses”
I think the owner deliberately left his car outise teh compund to advertise to teh neeighbours that he owns a Humvee!
I saw four of these things in my humble hood of South B this past saturday. I took photos of the almost comical reactions
