From poor and thin to poor but fat

I am away in the US with Mugithi.

I rented a Hyundai at the airport. The gas prices must be hitting home, the woman with heavy makeup at the rental agency (she had an ugly little pekingese crawling inside a child basket) told me Hyundais have been particularly popular.

Drove three hours, and then took an exit off the interstate, through some really downbeat townships. Mugithi noticed: “All the poor people are fat”. In the richer localities, where there are houses instead of trailer parks, and lawns instead of potted fungus and cacti, the people are fitter, some jog, some take their dogs walking and are generally thinner.

Junk is cheap. Organic way too expensive for the ‘regulars’.

hmmm..the other way around over here, acquisition of a pot belly is a mark of “making it.”

NYT had a story (last year) about how cheap fat/calories (from fast/junk food) were compared to vitamins (and other healthy foods) in US supermarkets

not to mention unsafe neighbourhoods to go jogging/exercising in,
elimination of sports from public schools to save money, and ridiculously expensive gym memberships. I just checked out a gym that wanted me to part with a cool $1,500 as a membership fee and another $150 on a monthly basis!???

That’s how it is in the States. Junk food is easier to access in the poor areas, groceries that sell healthy food are hard to find there and add to the fact that people who live in such areas more often than not cant afford fresh organic food; so Mcdonald’s or KFC is the food of choice!

Add to the fact that who is going to set up a gym in an area where people cant pay membership fees?
